People’s Kafe – The Secrets Granny Whispered in My Ears” is a kaleidoscopic ride into my Nani’s life set in pre and post-independence India right until Instagram stormed our lives. She led a life of purpose when odds were stacked against her. Born into a humble family of six siblings, in a heavily caste and gender prejudiced society, much before India gained freedom, Nani shattered the unwritten glass ceiling by attaining a graduate degree, carving a career at the National Family Planning Commission of India and following Ambedkar’s ideology of obliterating caste discrimination. Through her eyes, you will witness different periods of social and technology evolution within India. In an epoch, when women were primarily home makers, Nani led a life of her choice, choosing love, equality and faith. This book is a tribute to Nani, her old-fashioned wisdom that she imprinted on my impressionable mind through her life and living. You will find a sneak peek into her childhood spent on farms, the love of her life whom she met when in high school, a long-distance marriage across thousand miles and a profession that educated people about healthy number of babies to make! Besides you’ll also discover her quirks, passions, superpowers, the love that she showered on her family and pets she nurtured. Nani carried a quintessential zest for life and became a beacon of light for her family and future generations through her simple yet extraordinary life. Now I must bequeath to the next generation, treasure trove of her sapience – the secrets she whispered in my ears.

People’s Kafe – Stories of Human Emotions, Endeavors & Inclusion is my humble attempt to present to you my bank of experiences with people collected over years from workplace, society and home. These thirteen personal narratives will unfold to you my learning from consociating with people, deciphering their motivations and witnessing latent biases in the societal structures. As you sift through these real stories, you may find yourself questioning the accepted norms as I have attempted to unearth a “devil’s advocate” point of view. The stories are simple and relatable. I have tried to explore a wide range of topics, from simplistic ones like human aspirations to more complex ones like the invasion of technology in modern lives. My personal value of inclusion is another theme that runs as a continuum in three of the stories. With every story, my goal is to leave you with a thought-provoking nugget that may help us seek a better future for humankind.

We share a unique relationship with our grandparents. For us, they (Grandparents) are our first friends. We share all our doubts with them, and ask them our silly 🙂 questions and they also protect us from bullies, as every best friend would do. For them, we are their latest friend (probably the last) and they endow us with their gift of guidance and timeless wisdom. Even when they depart to their heavenly abode, they give us an important lesson that our time on earth is finite; hence, we must love and live every moment of this beautiful life. We shall never postpone giving care and sharing good times with family and friends. People’s Kafe – The Secrets Granny Whispered in My Ears is a wonderful narration of the life's journey of our grandparents. The generation has seen bullock carts as a mode of transport, Trunk Calls and weekly letters as a mode of communication and visits to our grandparents were our vacation plans. This book made me feel proud of the generation who fought for the freedom I enjoy today and brought prosperity which I have inherited from them. Also loved the format, a collection of 20 short stories, breezy to read and teleporting us to the era of churn and changes. Highly recommended for people of every generation as there is something for everyone.
